Üçağız: A Hidden Gem on the Lycian Coast

Facing the legendary Kekova Island, Üçağız is a charming coastal village with a unique past. Once connected to what is now one of Turkey’s largest Mediterranean islands, parts of the land—including much of the original city—sank after a powerful earthquake. The stunning island views that now define Üçağız only came into existence after this dramatic event.

A Peaceful Stop in the Kekova Region

Located near Kaleköy (Simena) and surrounded by historic sites like the sunken city of Kekova, Aperlai, and Gökkaya Bay, Üçağız is the perfect base to explore the treasures of this untouched region.

Despite its popularity with travellers from around the world—including visitors from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Canada—Üçağız has remained calm, quiet, and authentic. Tucked away from the main roads, it has been spared from the effects of mass tourism, and its laid-back, fishing village atmosphere remains intact.

Üçağız’s history dates back to the 5th century BCE. Today, the village has a population of around 450 and is known for its natural harbour, sheltered bay, and relaxed pace of life.

What Makes Üçağız Special

  • Ancient ruins beneath the sea: Just offshore, you’ll see Lycian sarcophagi and the submerged remains of a city partially claimed by the sea after the earthquake.
  • Safe, calm waters: Üçağız Bay is often as still as a lake, making it a haven for kayakers, with several kayaking schools operating locally.
  • On the Lycian Way: The famous long-distance trail passes through Üçağız, making it a welcome stop for hikers heading toward Demre.

In winter, the village falls almost silent as boat tours pause and only the occasional private yacht brings visitors. But as spring returns, Üçağız comes alive again—surrounded by green hills, clear waters, and the sound of gently bobbing boats.

What to Do and See in Üçağız

After arriving—whether by boat or car—you’ll have plenty of time to stroll around the village. Enjoy fresh seafood by the water, browse the small souvenir shops, or cool off with a refreshing swim. You can also rent a kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace.

Here are some of the highlights nearby:

1. The Ancient City of Theimussa

Right beside the village, the ruins of Theimussa date back to at least the 4th century BCE. You’ll see stone tombs, the remains of a fortress on a low hill, part of a city wall now submerged, and a dock carved into the rock at the eastern edge of the site.

2. Kaleköy (Simena)

Just a 15-minute walk from Üçağız, Kaleköy is one of the most beautiful villages in Turkey. With its hillside houses, ancient ruins, and panoramic views over Kekova, it feels like a step back in time. Don’t miss the homemade ice cream, and be sure to climb the fortress for one of the most stunning views on the Mediterranean coast—especially at sunset.

3. Kekova Island

Stretching 4.5 km across from Kaleköy, Kekova is now uninhabited and protected. It became an island in 141 CE when the isthmus connecting it to the mainland was destroyed in an earthquake.

Today, half of the island’s ancient ruins lie beneath the sea. The sunken city is visible from a boat, and you can see partially submerged stone walls, harbour remains, and ancient homes.
