Kaş Friday Market: Fresh Flavors for Your Sea Adventure
Fridays in Kaş have a unique rhythm that draws you in immediately. Early in the morning, before the sun reaches its peak, the scent of fresh soil spreads from the market area through the streets. If you are planning to set sail that day, the route is clear: First the market, then the deep blue. Most of our guests ask, "What will we eat on the boat?" but the real secret of flavor hides in those colorful stalls before boarding. For years, every Friday, I mingle with the crowd and inspect the products carefully arranged by the local ladies coming down from the mountain villages. It is right then that I remember a perfect Kaş boat tour experience actually begins not at sea, but among these bountiful stalls.
Market shopping here is not just a chore; it is a ritual. When the salt of the sea touches your lips and the sun warms your skin, you need to know beforehand what your soul will crave. I am not talking about those waxed, uniform products on supermarket shelves. I am talking about real flavors ripened in the sun, picked from the branch yesterday, with their aroma still lingering. In this guide, I will share what goes into my basket before heading to the captain's bridge and which flavors pair best with the salty sea.
From the Taurus Mountains to the Basket: The Most Natural Breakfast
The Kaş Friday Market is not just a shopping place; it is the heart of Mediterranean cuisine. Local producers from Gömbe and Sütleğen set up their stalls with the first light of morning. When you enter, a magnificent sea of greens welcomes you first. Arugula, cress, parsley... The dew on them hasn't dried yet, and their scent reaches you from meters away.
This place is a paradise not just for fruit, but for those who want a strong start to the day. Hand-cracked green olives gathered from centuries-old olive trees of the Mediterranean are the crown jewel of breakfast. When you add the snow-white "tulum" (goat) cheese obtained from the villagers' own livestock and real village eggs coming out of the straw, you set a table that you cannot find even in the most luxurious hotel in the world.

Time flows slowly on a blue voyage. When we turn off the boat's engine, only the sound of waves remains. In that silence, the pleasure of an ice-cold slice of watermelon or a crunchy plum is priceless. That is why, before our Kaş boat tour, we always recommend you to feel the pulse of the market. Because we know that a good day at sea starts with good market shopping.
Captain Ergun's Advice:
"When you enter the market, don't just focus on the stalls, follow the smell. Towards the upper entrance of the market, you will see local ladies at the steaming griddles. The 'gözleme' (Turkish pancakes) they make with herbs and curd cheese are the unsung heroes of Kaş. My advice; skip breakfast and go there hungry. Eat one right there, in that authentic atmosphere, while it is still steaming hot. Starting the day with such delicious energy will give you strength to swim all day. After satisfying your hunger with this local delicacy, we await you at the harbor to enjoy the treats our boat has prepared specially for you."
Flavors That Pair Best with Saltwater: Our Market Basket
The sea makes you hungry, thirsty, and crave something sweet. But this need for sweets cannot be dismissed with packaged snacks. The body wants to reclaim the water and minerals it lost from nature. This is where the fruit stalls of the Kaş market come into play.
Prickly Pear (Frenk İnciri)
At the entrance of the market, you will surely notice those thorny, orange or purple fruits usually sold in buckets filled with ice. That is the Mediterranean's most "troublesome" but delicious fruit: Prickly Pear. Locals call it "Mısır İnciri." It has an incredibly refreshing aroma, tasting somewhere between kiwi and melon. When buying from the market, definitely ask the seller to peel it for you, because if those tiny thorns get into your hands, your day might be ruined. But when you eat that ice-cold fruit on the boat deck, you will feel your insides cooling down.

Crunchy Almonds and Green Almonds (Çağla)
The Kaş and Datça regions are famous for their almonds. If you catch the season (early spring), you must try the fresh green almonds (Çağla) sold on ice. If the season has passed, buy a paper bag of fresh shelled almonds cracked by the village ladies. Why? Because almonds are the best snack to settle the stomach and keep you full at sea. Especially for those whose stomachs get sensitive when the boat rocks slightly, almonds are like a natural remedy. They both give energy and help the body recover after swimming in salty water.
Kings of Summer: Melon and Watermelon
A summer day is unthinkable without this duo. But instead of buying from the supermarket, if you find those local heirloom melons at the market, you will understand the difference in taste. We always keep these ready in our fridge on the boat, but if you bring that honey-sweet melon you chose yourself, the scent spreads to the whole bay when you cut it in the middle of the sea. Eating watermelon against the sea view and throwing the seeds into the water is a sweet tradition here; it becomes a feast for the fish.

From the Colors of the Market to the Peace of the Blue
Walking from the market towards the harbor, leaving behind the crowd, voices, and smells of spices, is like an intermission in a theater play. You leave the sweet rush of the city behind. The endless blue that appears before you as you walk down the hill is the harbinger of the peace you are about to experience.
The moment you arrive at the harbor and see your boat, the fatigue of the market is replaced by sweet anticipation. You leave the burdens of life on land at the pier and step onto the deck. You no longer need to think about what to eat. What awaits you is your captain's safe route and the exquisite tables prepared by the crew for you. In our Kaş boat tour philosophy, our guest switches to "pleasure" mode the moment they step on the boat. While you enjoy the sea, the smell of olive oil dishes rising from the galley will be the perfect finale to your market tour.
Where exactly is the Kaş Friday Market and what time does it open?
The Kaş Friday Market is set up in the large area just behind the bus station (otogar), a bit up from the center. This is not a fixed building or a closed marketplace; it is an open area used as a parking lot on other days of the week. However, when Friday comes, it transforms into a huge and colorful marketplace shaded by tents. Stalls are fully set up by 08:00 in the morning and continue until around 18:00-19:00 in the evening.
Do they accept credit cards at the market or should I carry cash?
This is a very important detail. While some larger vendors like cheese or olive sellers inside the market might accept credit cards, cash is usually the only option at the stalls of village ladies, fruit and vegetable sellers, and those delicious gözleme makers. Definitely keep some coins and cash with you. Also, if you want to bargain, cash always makes things easier.
What souvenirs can I buy from the Kaş market besides fruit?
Not just fruits and vegetables, the Kaş market is also very rich in textiles and handicrafts. You can find "Kaş linen" or "Şile cloth" style breezy dresses and peshtemals (Turkish towels) that you can wear on the boat and at the beach. Also, homemade pomegranate molasses, tomato pastes, and herbal teas like mountain thyme and sage made by villagers are wonderful souvenir alternatives.
